Nalleli Cobo
Activist of the Year
Presented by Jane Fonda
Nalleli Cobo grew up 30 feet from an oil well. At the age of 9, she founded a grassroots campaign called “People Not Pozos,” Spanish for “wells,” to shut down the well that was making her family and her sick. The toxic oil-drilling site was shuttered in March 2020, when she turned 19. Her continued organizing against urban oil extraction has now yielded a major policy movement within both the Los Angeles City Council and Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, which voted unanimously to ban new oil exploration and phase out of existing sites. Nalleli’s story and leadership also inspired the enactment of SB 1137, which bans all new oil wells within 3200 feet of communities in California. Nalleli was the winner of the 2022 Goldman Environmental Prize and named to the 2022 Time 100 Next list.

Niall McCarthy
Lifetime Legal Achievement
Presented by US Senator Alex Padilla
Niall has been named a Top 100 attorney in California many times by the Daily Journal and won multiple California Attorney of the Year awards from California Lawyer Magazine. Niall has prosecuted some of the most high profile false claims cases arising out of fraud against the government, including handling the Hunter Laboratories Litigation, in which he negotiated the then-largest False Claims recovery in California history, $301 million. Niall has also led many consumer fraud class action cases, including acting as Co-Lead National Class Counsel in actions against some of the largest banks and credit card companies in the country, which returned hundreds of millions of dollars to consumers. Niall’s other notable cases include compelling an insurance company to pay for a lifesaving bone marrow transplant for a cancer patient and exposing a massive billing fraud by British Petroleum. He has practiced extensively in the area of elder abuse returning money to senior citizens who were swindled. He is an elected member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), the American College of Trial Lawyers, and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, and is a past president of Consumer Attorneys of California.
